The North Tyneside Area Command Headquarters, built by Miller Construction has been presented with a Gold award at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Northern Network Awards 2011.
The £23 million project, designed by Newcastle-based Ryder, opened a year ago, marking the start of an ambitious programme by Northumbria Police Authority to upgrade facilities in North Tyneside.
Chris Webster, Chief Executive, Miller Construction, said: “We are delighted that North Tyneside Area Command HQ has been recognised at the RIBA awards. Throughout the project we worked closely with the Northumbria Police Authority to ensure we delivered a Headquarter building that is fit for the 21st century to both meet and exceed the needs of Northumbria Police, both now and in the future. This award is testament to the hard work and dedication of the entire team involved in this project.”
The RIBA Northern Network awards showcase the finest new buildings, landscape design and interiors that the north of England has to offer.
The new headquarter building provides an integrated working area for circa of 400 people including police officers, community support officers and police staff, support and training facilities as well as a large custody suite with 40 modern cells.
The judges were impressed with the new modern police station and commented: “With community policing at the heart of the design philosophy, the new station provides a welcoming, friendly and flexible environment for both the public and corporate users. The new building sets a benchmark for design.”
