Miller Construction has picked up two awards at the Northern Local Authority Building Control (LABC) awards 2011.
North Tyneside Area Command Headquarters, built by Miller Construction and designed by Ryder Architecture, won the awards for ‘Best Commercial Building over £1million’ and ‘Best Sustainable Project.’ The annual LABC Awards celebrate excellence achieved through building standards, technical innovation and sustainable designs, at local, regional and national level.
Ian Jubb, Regional Managing Director – North, Miller Construction, said: “We are delighted to have received two LABC awards. We worked closely with the Northumbria Police Authority to ensure that we delivered a Headquarter building that was fully equipped to meet the constantly changing needs of present and future policing requirements.
“Accolades such as these, reinforces that we deliver first class, quality buildings which are fit for the 21st century, encompassing sustainable and environmental features. Miller takes its environmental credentials and responsibilities very seriously and recognition as the Best Sustainable Project in the North reiterates this.”
The new £23 million headquarters has replaced the existing police station in Alexandra Street, Wallsend, and provides an integrated working area for approximately 400 people, support and training facilities and a large custody suite with 40 modern cells.
The building achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating for its sustainable features, including, solar heating panels, rainwater harvesting, automatic sensor control, solar shading and daylight dimming to reduce power demand.
