We were selected by joint owners Hermes / Prudential to undertake a series of improvements to one of the largest shopping centres in the UK, building on the experience of construction in similar occupied retail centres where continual trading is paramount.
Improvements included:
- Queen's Court (£8.5 million) - 4 new restaurants set around a refurbished courtyard and enclosed wintergarden mall
- City Square (£1.5 million) - Improvements to one of the primary external public spaces including provisions for an external pavilion
- Wayfinding (£1.5 million) - Improvements with live mall environments to enhance signage and public awareness including new feature ceilings
- Eagle Walk (£1 million) - Concept scheme to create additional retail units
All sectors of work required a high degree of logistical management and planning with Centre Management to ensure all Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) aspects were adhered to, especially in relation to the public interface.
Queen's Court, the major section of works, comprised full demolition of the existing courtyard features and construction of two steel framed wings with piled foundations and architectural sensitive fenestration to mirror the existing ionic building. To undertake the works effectively within the Client's strict timescale, Miller installed a central tower crane and conveyors to optimise material handling and unitised components.
