The Big Community Challenge, York

Whilst building the City of York’s new council headquarters, Miller Construction brought green spaces to a deprived York community. Miller headed a project to transform Westfield Primary School’s playing fields into allotments and garden plots as part of the Big Community Challenge.

Working in conjunction with charity York Cares, Miller worked with 200 volunteers from 15 local businesses, 2 schools, Huntington and York High, and members of the local community. Over the 3 days allocated, the volunteers built 24 plots, a water pipe and tap, three compost bins, created gravel pathways with wheel chair access and raised beds.

The challenge highlighted Miller’s commitment to making a difference in the communities it works in. Westfield is one of York’s most deprived areas where many families don’t have gardens of their own. As allotment waiting lists have become increasingly long, this challenge has delivered an outdoor area for those who otherwise would not have access to green spaces.
