Jewel & Esk Valley College

Miller Construction delivered state-of-the-art facilities at both of Jewel & Esk Valley College’s campuses: Milton Road, Edinburgh, Eskbank and Midlothian.
The Milton Road campus, built in 1977 as Leith Nautical College, has retained its iconic ‘ship’ shape despite being completely refitted and gaining a new extension. At Eskbank we provided a new facility adjacent to the existing campus.
The design ensures the buildings can be expanded as required, both in plan form and section, and the double height units can utilise easily constructed mezzanine floors to add further teaching areas. Accommodation within the new building offers a series of social spaces, including, a refectory, cafe and sandwich bar. The spa, gym and treatment rooms simulate top end hotel facilities, many of which are also open for use by the local community.
Both campuses are extensively landscaped to create a green and inspiring learning environment. A green travel plan serves both campuses, aimed at reducing car dependence.
The project was carried out in a live environment.
"The project team has worked well together and Miller Construction took the lead in moving towards a guaranteed minimum price.
"Progress reports have been realistic and on time and the willingness of Miller Staff to seek solutions rather than create problems is much appreciated. All of this has been delivered professionally and with a wit and enjoyment that is infectious."
