Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education

We were involved in the construction of Grimsby’s new university centre which also included the demolition of the Bargate Fitness Suite, which was completed in 2011.
The new building was added to the existing Nuns Corner campus and the new centre’s facilties include state-of-the-art lecture theatres, research facilities, clinical skills rooms, laboratories for science and sports physiology, computer suites, studios for television and radio broadcast and a fully licensed bar with food outlets, all based around a central atrium. The central atrium space is covered by a curved 580-sq-m-roof light.
The building itself was constructed from materials that have received an A-Grade in “The Green Guide” and reflect the natural local habitat. Lighting was designed to flow throughout the site which is strategically placed to reduce the light pollution at Nuns Corner.
The University Centre has low carbon bio-mass boilers to provide heating and a supply of hot water. Low carbon bio-mass boilers offer an alternative to fossil fuelled boilers, replacing almost 100% of the carbon dioxide that would have been omitted by fossil-fuel fired alternatives, bringing substantial benefits to the environment.
The building achieved a BREEAM rating of ‘very good’.
