The building under construction, will house new transformers to replace the ones currently on site and also provide an operational staff office, mess and welfare facilities.  The building under construction is a new steel and concrete framed building, 15,230m² in area, built behind a retained façade and over the top of operational buildings.  It is to house a 275kv, 33kv and 11kv transformer enclosures.

The existing stone façade will be refurbished to repair damaged sections and improve its general appearance.

The site is in a restricted city centre location where the building footprint fills the full site.  The listed and retained stone façade is being held up during construction by façade retention systems which are required to be altered and then removed at key stages with permanent support systems being provided.  The façade itself is being monitored for movement during construction.  The actual listed building was also in poor condition with rot and asbestos requiring extensive maintenance works to make it safe.
