This project involves the major refurbishment and conversion of four 18th Century Grade II listed buildings, previously occupied by Southwark Council, into student accommodation for the University of the Arts, London. The works include the demolition of a single storey building and the construction of a new extension.
Situated next to Camberwell College of Arts, the development stretches across both sides of Peckham Road, with three buildings on one side of the road (West, Central and East House) and the fourth on the other (South House), accommodating 155 students in affordable housing right on the College's doorstep.
Due to the Grade II listing of three of the existing buildings, many internal and external features required to be protected and retained in line with the Listed Building Planning Consent. Refurbishment and remodelling works of the four buildings includes the removal of asbestos, internal partitions and building services.
On completion of the demolition and strip out works, the buildings will be remodelled internally to form student accommodation, communal and administration areas including partitions, bathrooms, kitchens, doors / screens. New building services will be delivered throughout with internal finishes and full FF&E (furniture, fixtures & equipment) provided.
The contract also includes external works involving the replacement and refurbishment of underground drainage, light well enlargements, new access ramps, hard landscaping and refurbishment of the existing facades.
The refurbishment of these landmark buildings will create a campus-style experience for Camberwell students. The halls will consist of single and twin rooms arranged into shared flats, as well as self-contained studio flats. The gardens surrounding the buildings will be for the use of resident students.
Camberwell Campus is aiming to achieve a BREEAM "Very Good" rating.
