In September 2011 Barnsley College welcomed students into its brand new campus offering an array of fully-equipped classrooms, workshops, IT and learning resources including brand new hair and beauty salons, training kitchen facilities, dance studios, a fully operational radio and TV studio, two new recording studios complete with equipment used by top record labels and WiFi access throughout.
The design allowed for the introduction of external windows to each major teaching space, providing natural daylight via elements such as the atrium.
The new campus includes a centrally located Learning Resources Centre providing a heart for the campus. Additionally students can enjoy a new flexible Learning Environment which consists of a blend of indoor and outdoor zones, all of which can be used for learning.
The atrium space has been designed as a multi-functional area incorporating the refectory, a space to address students and parents, and an area for College exhibition and presentation purposes.
We always aim to provide an energy efficient building and on this project we achieved a BREEAM rating of ‘very good.’ Miller Construction worked closely with Barnsley College ensuring that an innovative approach was taken to solve design issues using environmentally conscious solutions and embracing the sustainability aspirations of the College, whilst working within the limitations of the budget.
