Barnsley College Apprentices

Miller Construction is giving students studying ‘the trades’ the opportunity to gain experience by working on the site of the new Barnsley College development.

Working in partnership with Barnsley College and Construction Yorkshire, a social enterprise engaging with deprived communities to improve local employability, Miller Construction has welcomed eight South Yorkshire apprentices on site.

Offering students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience whilst studying, not only enhances the wider learning experience but better prepares them for the challenges and obstacles they are likely to face when working in their chosen industry on completion of their studies.

Eight trainees work four days a week on site alongside a number of Miller Construction’s supply chain partners and spend one day in the classroom studying for a variety of NVQs.

In addition to the eight apprentices joining the Miller Construction team on site, a further two have been taken on for the duration of the project by one of Miller’s main sub-contractors, Yorkshire-based NG Bailey.

This partnership between ourselves, Barnsley College and Construction Yorkshire combined with the strong and respected relationship with our supply chain partners, illustrates our commitment to the communities where we work, providing social benefits and supporting personal development for young people.
